Later that day, resting at a table in the Crosskey Inn, the Principal asked himself again what had gone wrong. The question was academic: he of all men knew that a guerrilla army will fight only on its own terms. At first all had seemed to go as planned. The encircling foot soldiers, led by Eric, had stepped into the small clearing just as the nauseating rite of book burning was beginning. “Drop your weapons and surrender, Traders!” he heard the young general call out. “You are surrounded by the forces of the Principal!”

From the shocked and angry shouts that followed, the Principal assumed that the surprise had worked. He raised his arm, prepared to offer Eric assistance in accepting a surrender. In the next instant he heard the sounds of metal on metal and realized that fighting had broken out and, the instant after that, found his own forces under attack by armed men from the surrounding woods.

For a few minutes he was too busy to do more than shout orders and defend himself. After a time he realized that he had underestimated the Traders; suspecting that just such a trap might be set, they had evidently kept the main force of their men away from the camp, in order to encircle and trap the trappers.

The Traders were no match for the Principal’s soldiers, and soon the woods were thick with the bodies of dead and dying, most of them Traders. The remaining attackers began to turn and flee, and the Principal shouted orders to capture them alive for interrogation. A large red-haired man, who had seemed to be one of the leaders of the attack, struggled to his feet from where he had been lying and began to run. Quickly the Principal set off after him, glad for all of his practice at foot racing. He had nearly caught up with his prey when someone stumbled into his path and he found himself face-to-face with a wild-eyed young Trader armed only with a pointed stake. He pushed the young man’s weapon aside and prepared to resume the chase. But the boy surprised him and attacked, fighting wildly and without technique. Though he had a half dozen opportunities to kill the boy, he fought for surrender instead, satisfied that he had at least one Trader prisoner in hand. He had nearly disarmed his foe when the man he had been chasing returned.

The newcomer stopped in surprise, then suddenly said to the other, “Look it here, ’tis the Principal himself!”

“How do you know?”

“Look at his arm! This is our chance to fulfill the holy plan and avenge Brother Yosh!”

Without warning and with no seeming care for his own safety, the younger man suddenly threw himself at Will. Will thrust and felt his sword go into his attacker, but the momentum carried them both into a tree, and he found himself pinned against it by the weight of the dying boy’s body.

Before he could disentangle himself, the red-haired man approached, wielding a long knife.
